Brief Position Overview

The Advising Center assists students in understanding academic requirements and enabling them to complete their program requirements as efficiently as possible. Advisors are responsible for promoting student success through accurate and responsible advisement in the areas of academics, registration, persistence, and the student experience. Advisors are responsible for building a supportive environment that assists students in achieving their educational goals by providing excellent customer service while identifying student needs and mentoring students to resolve potential academic issues. Advisors work closely with other university support teams to ensure that student inquiries are addressed in a timely and efficient manner. Advisors are proactive in contacting students on a regular basis and guiding students as they progress toward their educational goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position meets individually with students to assist with items such as, but not limited to: course registration, transcripts/credential evaluation, and creating plans of study. This position interprets multiple placement scores to place students in the appropriate level courses. Advisors recommend courses and course load based on students' academic ability, personal obligations, and career goals. This position must be able to utilize student information systems and other electronic tools (degree audit, appointment scheduling etc.) to effectively assist students. Advisors support students with setting goals and connecting desired outcomes with current activities, time management, and developing critical thinking skills. Academic Advisors coach students to explore alternatives to overcome barriers to persistence or graduation and make appropriate resource referrals when necessary. Academic Advisors must maintain familiarity with academic programs. They must be current on policies and procedures including institutional policies, federal, and state regulations. Advisors are expected to maintain accurate and detailed advising notes in appropriate electronic and paper-based systems; track advisees' progress during and at the end of each semester; maintain records and permanent files for current and previous students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); and maintain and update Degree Works degree audit information. This position must be able to communicate with students in person and/or by email, mail, phone, web conferencing, and text messaging. Academic Advisors assist in promoting student self-service tools during advising interactions. They must be able to understand how diversity, differences, and institutional/social barriers influence the student experience to effectively practice inclusive advising strategies for all students. Academic Advisors participate and assist during all orientation programs and other enrollment related events. Academic Advisors are expected to communicate in a professional manner with department faculty, university administrators, staff, students, and campus visitors. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Education Required: Bachelor's degreeExperience Required:

Experience in one or more of the following: advising, orientation, retention, or mentoring roles

Knowledge of the typical problems encountered by undergraduate students in selecting a course of study and in successfully preparing a plan of study to prepare for entry into a degree program

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Demonstrated ability to organize a wide range of complex tasks and attention to detail

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Experience Preferred:

Understand diversity, differences and institutional/social barriers influencing students

Experience in one or more of the following: advising, orientation, retention, or mentoring roles

Ability to work independently as well as function as part of a team

Demonstrated knowledge of higher education offices and resources that support student success

Experience working with enrollment and degree auditing software such as DegreeWorks, Banner, MyInfo or other database
